What is The Tokyo Life?

Global Language Institute (GLI) conceived The Tokyo Life (TTL) as part of its Global Initiative to service schools, partner with businesses, and play an active role in the greater community.

The primary goal of TTL is to help Japan’s growing community of foreign residents. By providing guides for daily life and features about Tokyo, TTL hopes to help them ease into their new lives. In the same way, TTL can also help businesses welcome a fresh, driven, and diverse workforce through GLI’s targeted services such as language support for English-speaking workers. Lastly, through these, GLI hopes to promote greater development and changes in the status quo of English-language education in Japan. And in turn, it hopes to highlight the benefits of a globalized Japan.

What makes TTL special?

After exhaustive research, TTL discovered a gap in support for foreign residents in Japan. Despite the ubiquity of English-language websites and guides online, the quality of living guides is still remarkably low. Government websites are overcrowded, hard to navigate, and usually lacking intelligible English (much less other languages). Moreover, independent guides and blogging sites regularly forego useful information. They also fail to deliver knowledge in the simplest way possible in their guides.

TTL seeks to fill this gap by providing concise guides with easy-to-follow visuals and infographics. In addition, GLI hopes to sell its expertise and certain services to individuals and companies through TTL.

What services will GLI offer?

As an English consulting company, GLI can offer translation services to businesses who want to attract foreign talent. GLI also hopes to work in partnership with local government and businesses to improve English-language services in Japan and help it globalize.

Who is TTL’s target market?

TTL’s users will mostly consist of recent arrivals to Japan such as those on a working holiday visa. However, TTL also hopes to make Japan more accessible and appealing to individuals overseas. In addition, sections dedicated to long-term residents will make TTL a well-rounded resource for non-Japanese residents.

How will TTL meet its business goals?

By filling this gap, GLI hopes to attract the attention of the growing foreign community within Japan. GLI also hopes to forge partnerships with local government and businesses to realize a truly global Japan.

TTL’s aim is to focus on relevant and high-quality content based on the life experiences and concerns of non-Japanese residents. In doing so, it hopes to become a hub where foreign residents can raise real issues. It also seeks to encourage individuals to support one another. Through this, TTL can also serve as a benchmark of how well the government is performing its duties to support the non-Japanese community.
